  • Nonviolent Direct Action Training: Defending Housing, Immigrant Communities, and Democracy - Fellowship Hall

    Saturday, June 13, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Nonviolent Direct Action (NVDA) is the strategic use of immediately effective, disobedient acts to achieve a political or social goal and challenge an unjust power dynamic. This happens at points of intervention through the embodied practice of nonviolence.

Join Marla Marcum for an interactive NVDA training to build the skills and relationships we need to take direct action to disrupt harm and spark momentum for the work of building stronger, more resilient communities that put people over profits and neighbors over authoritarian schemes. We will learn about strategies for designing and deploying effective actions, practice making collective decisions under stress, and explore what it takes to believe that we have the power to spark change in the face of long odds.

The training is led by experienced trainers and practitioners and will be accessible to newcomers, as well as those with direct action experience. Dress comfortably and bring your curiosity, a water bottle, and a notebook.

“You cannot, you cannot use someone else's fire. You can only use your own. And in order to do that, you must first be willing to believe that you have it.”
    ― Audre Lorde

Marla Marcum (she/her) is a (co)Founder of the Climate Disobedience Center and serves as its Director. Past and current projects include the Fierce Vulnerability Network, the Line 3 remote legal support team, the No Coal No Gas campaign, and the Let’sGo! Network. Marla is passionate about the deep work of cultivating grounded, sustainable grassroots movement power and building supportive communities of resistance among unlikely allies. For 30 years, Marla has been active in movements for climate justice, queer liberation (particularly in communities of faith), and a range of direct-action campaigns to disrupt business-as-usual (most often fossil fuel infrastructure). She is passionate about supporting groups to find their way into strategic community that opens new possibilities, while honoring the gifts and wisdom that people bring. Marla is a child of the Missouri Ozarks, a survivor of many New England winters, and is now based in Knoxville, TN.
